Child Development Psychology

I have always considered myself to be a good parent, but I never knew how many things I didn’t know about my little ones until I took a class in child development psychology. I have been interested in child development and psychology for as long as I can remember so, when I went back to school, it was only natural that I get a degree specializing in that field. I had figured that, as an astute student of human nature, I would be well within my comfort zone. The joke was on me when the child development psychology class was more strange and foreign than I could have imagined.

Not that it wasn’t a fascinating class. It can be a real joy to be challenged, and I felt challenged very day. Child psychology, I learned in that class, is anything but static. From day to day, week to week, and month to month, children are learning and becoming better, more sophisticated thinkers. That means that the interests, fears, and obsessions that a kid has one day will not necessarily even be a factor within a month or two. Kids come up with phobias, only to lose them just as quickly. They get so interested in a toy that they can’t put it down, only to get bored with it all of the sudden and never touch it again. These are some of the paradoxes of child development psychology.

To us, the adults, these behaviors may seem strange, but to a child development psychologist they make a lot of sense. There is a lot more purpose in the way that kids interact with the world than most people can even see. One of the central teachings of child development psychology is that make believe is a sort of way for kids to model behaviors and explore the world around them. When they come up with a new interest and lose all affection for an old one, it is because they are discarding an old behavior, motivation, or idea in favor of something new. Sometimes, they will come back to it at a later time. Just as often, however, once it is gone it is gone for good. More on Child Discipline.

I think the child development psychology classes have even effected the way I care for my kids. I used to feel guilty about sending them to after care or making them stay over at their friends houses sometimes, but I have since realized that that guilt was misplaced. By being forced to spend more time in a group environment, my kids get the chance to learn how to interact with other children in a social setting. This is one of the most important stages in child development psychology, so I am actually helping them!

Child Insomnia

Child insomnia is something pretty much every family has to go through at one point or another. Pretty much every child has worries and anxieties from time to time. When all of these worries build up, they can be overwhelming or even terrifying. Children start to worry about death, the bogeyman, aliens, and monsters in the closet. Together, all of these worries can quickly add up to a sleepless night or two. In most cases, child insomnia goes away on its own, or only affects the kid once or twice a month. Sometimes, however, childhood insomnia stays around. As bad as sleep disorders can be for adults, they are an even bigger problem for kids. Kids who are unable to sleep are unable to learn and interact in a normal way.

Eliminating Violence In Schools

School shootings, however tragic they are, have had one good effect: they have created a culture where people are determined to do whatever they can to eliminate violence in schools. Although a lot of people talk about installing metal detectors and security guards as a way to stop school violence, this approach only tackles the most extreme forms. In reality, if someone wants to bring a gun to school and shoot people, someone is going to get hurt. Ideally, you want to stop things way before that. That is why more and more school districts are taking active approaches to stop school bullying and end violence in the classroom.

Baby Skin Care Issues

When it comes to babies, we have to take all sorts of pre-cautions. Their skin, eyes, bottom, and other features are just so delicate. It seems like anything can irritate them. This is why cosmetic companies like Johnson and Johnson put such a great focus on baby skin care. Isn’t your child well worth it?

Common Solutions For Children Allergies

Basically, they divide the skin on the back into a grid and put a small sample of the protein from a common allergen in each square of it. The ones that the child are allergic to flare up, and the other ones don’t. You can tell how severe a childhood allergy is by how much it flares up when a sample of the substance is put on the skin. Of course once you allergy test children, you have to decide what to do about it. The most common solution to childhood allergies, of course, is prescribing an antihistamine. Antihistamines like Zyrtec and Claritin have gotten very popular lately because they effectively treat mild or moderate allergies with few side effects.

Understanding Natural Family Planning

Natural family planning is a method for understanding the female reproductive cycle well enough to plan the optimum timing for trying to conceive or avoiding pregnancy. It is a system by which a woman can get to understand her own body’s signs well enough to determine that her cycles are normal and healthy. Natural family planning is not the “rhythm method.”

Purchasing Memorable Gifts for Family

I want to purchase a few nice and memorable gifts for my step daughter this Christmas.  Teenagers don’t like getting clothes as gifts and I really wouldn’t want to put myself through the chaos that is shopping malls during the holidays.  I am on a tight budget as well but I still want to purchase something that will last and most importantly something they will enjoy.  Jewelry Boxes are on top of my list as far as gift options but I am running into some problems when searching for something nice.  Teenagers don’t like the typical wood plain boxes; I want to get something with a younger feel.  Hopefully some of my friends or co-workers can lead me in the right direction, Christmas is right around the corner and I’m running out of time!

Sneaky Ways To Get Kids To Eat Healthy

Substitute a fruit smoothie, topped off with a dollop of non-dairy whipped cream, for that shocking bowl of granola. A proper introduction to granola is to serve it as a snack. Toss in some nuts and dried fruits to add sweetness. How about a glass of milk with that? Yes, when you’re pushing healthy recipes for kids, you do have to be a bit sneaky, but it’s a noble objective! How about some whole grain crackers and spinach dip as an after school snack? This almost looks like chips and dip! “Thanks, Mom!” Convenience foods are simply becoming too expensive to serve on a regular basis. You can subtly drop hints, explaining why you’re making your own chicken strips for them instead of buying the large frozen bag of salt, sugar and additive-heavy ones at the supermarket.
