Though I don’t go camping any longer, I will probably do so again in the future. One thing I learned in the past when we did our yearly camping trip was that you should avoid buying stuff in camping shops if you can at all help it. It didn’t seem to matter how well prepared I thought I was, I was always running out of something or had forgotten to get something altogether. There were even times when someone we camped with had forgotten to tell us what they were bringing, and we would have to go get something needed for preparation. As a rule, camping shops tend to be more expensive. You will find these at campgrounds and that is because everyone needs something, and no one wants to have to drive back into town to get something like butter or perhaps a tent stake that has turned up missing.

That hummingbird house sat vacant for a long time. I would watch it everyday, but there was never a hummingbird living in it. When I was growing up, all backpacking tents were pretty much the same. If you were going somewhere warmer, you wouldn’t put on the rain fly. When I got to the age of 15, my dad gave me his collection of National Geographic magazines. He had been an avid reader of the publication ever since he was 15, so he had amassed quite a store of National Geographics. What’s so cool about it was that the articles didn’t seem to get outdated – at least most of them didn’t. You can read a National Geographic magazine article written 20 years ago and, if it was about a remote enough part of the world, assume that not much had changed. Even if things had changed, that article is still a part of a people’s history. You are still seeing a glimpse of history from times gone by.
